Lesson 4

Belonging to the Lord’s Church

1. When exactly is a person added to the Lord’s church? (Acts 2:38, 41, 47; 1 Cor. 12:13)

2. Who adds a person to the Lord’s church? (Acts 2:47)

3. What is the Lord’s church also referred to in Scripture? (Ephesians 1:22-23)

4. Do all Christians belong to the same church? (Ephesians 4:4; cf. Colossians 3:15).

5. Why are denominational names that honor men wrong? (1 Corinthians 1:10-13)

6. What name glorifies God instead? (1 Peter 4:16; cf. Acts 11:26; 26:28)

7. What will those who “wear the name of Christ” do? (Colossians 3:17)

Holding onto the Lord by Our Devotion to His Body

8. Is anyone so independent, self-sufficient, and super-capable that he/ she does not need

the church? (Ephesians 4:11-16). Does any Christian have the right to “fly solo”?

9. How is it true that Christians necessarily depend on one another for spiritual strength

and support? (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

10. What will help prevent our “falling way from the living God”? (Hebrews 3:12-14)

Meeting Our Responsibilities to “One Another”

11. Who are Christians to fellowship or “receive” as one of their own? (Romans 15:7)

12. What love did Jesus command His disciples to have for one another? (Jn 15:12-13)

13. There are about 30 different “one another” commands given to Christians such as “encourage one another,” “admonish one another,” “serve one another,” and “confess your sins to one another” (Rom. 12:10, 16; 14:13, 19; 15:7, 14; 1 Cor. 6:7; 12:25; Gal. 5:26; Eph. 4:25; 5:21; Phil. 2:3; Col. 3:9, 13, 16; 1 Thes. 3:12; 4:18; 5:11, 13, 15; 1 Tim. 2:1; Heb. 10:24-25; Jas. 4:11; 1 Pet. 4:9, 10; 5:5, 14; 1 John 1:7)  In light of these commands, how important is it that we maintain our fellowship with one another?

Local Church Membership

• Note: There is only one universal body or church that is comprised of all saved people worldwide (Eph. 4:4; 1:22-23; Mat. 16:18; Acts 2:47; Heb. 12:23), yet there are many local churches (Rom. 16:16; e.g., 1 Cor. 1:2; 1 Thes. 1:1).

14. What’s the significance of Saul joining himself to the church in Jerusalem? (Acts 9:26-28) (Join from KOLLAOO = “to glue together, to cement, to fasten together” cf. Mt. 19:5)

15. Must every Christian join himself to a local church of God’s people in order to fulfill God’s will in their lives?

16. Why should all Christians assemble with other Christians? (Hebrews 10:23-25)

17. “Forsake” cannot refer to total abandonment of the practice (How can we be in the habit of something we no longer do?). How can we be certain we have obeyed this command?

18. To what were the members of the church at Jerusalem devoted? (Acts 2:41-42)

To What Local Church Should I Belong?

19. Do all local churches please the Lord? (e.g., Revelation 2-3)

20. Could my efforts to worship God be done in vain if I “join” myself to a local church

that follows the traditions and creeds of men? (Matthew 15:7-9)

21. What standard should I always go by in choosing a local church? (Ephesians 1:22

23; Colossians 1:18; 3:17; cf. John 12:48)
