Drawing Near to God

“No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught of God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.” – John 6:44-45

Does Thou Not Fear God?

By Larry Ray Hafley

This is the question the dying, penitent thief asked of his fellow sufferer on the cross (Lk. 23:40). It is a good question. Do you fear God? Do you have proper regard, respect, and reverence for your Creator, Redeemer, and Judge?

"For who in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord? God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him" (Ps. 89:6, 7). Do our lives, our thoughts, words, and deeds show that we truly "fear God"? Remember, "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Heb. 10:31).

Therefore, since we are his children and are citizens of his immoveable, unshakable kingdom, "let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire" (Heb. 12:28, 29).

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up" (Jas. 4:10). Such humility is not possible without "reverence and godly fear" of his eternal might and majesty. Men are not humble before those whom they do not respect or fear. "Dost thou fear God?"

No man is truly wise who does not fear God and keep his commandments, for "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" and "wisdom" (Ps. 111:10; Prov. 1:7). Men do not serve and obey those whom they do not reverence or fear. "Dost thou not fear God?"
